OpenAI Eyes $30 Billion Funding Round at $1.25 Trillion Valuation

The AI giant is reportedly prioritizing a massive private capital raise over an immediate public listing, setting a new record for private company valuations.

A staggering $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation is the target for OpenAI’s latest funding effort, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The AI laboratory is reportedly moving to secure up to $30 billion in new private capital, a move that would see it bypass a public offering in favor of a massive institutional round. This development suggests the company is prioritizing immediate liquidity and strategic partnerships over the complexities of going public right now.

The round is being led by major investor Coatue, alongside significant participation from investors based in the United Arab Emirates. Terms are still under active negotiation, which means the final figures could shift before the deal is officially closed. This current report follows a similar announcement from Bloomberg just one month ago, which indicated OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a slightly higher $1.4 trillion valuation. Despite the slight variance in the numbers, the core strategy remains consistent: raising immense sums of private money to fuel continued growth.

Beyond the sheer volume of cash involved, the UAE investment may come with additional strategic benefits. Reports indicate that the funding could be coupled with a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity from the region. This combination of capital and infrastructure would allow OpenAI to expand its operational capabilities without relying solely on existing domestic resources. The company itself declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.

If OpenAI successfully closes this round at the reported valuation, it will break historical records to become the most valuable private company in the world. This milestone would also significantly raise the bar for its future public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a previous fundraising round in March that valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion on a post-money basis. A jump to $1.25 trillion pre-money would represent a substantial increase in investor confidence and market positioning.

The high valuation placed on OpenAI will likely have ripple effects across the broader AI sector, particularly for its primary rival, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is imminent, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could be released at any moment. Reports indicate that Anthropic is targeting a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. If OpenAI sets a new benchmark with its current round, it may pressure Anthropic to justify its own asking price in the public markets.

Anthropic has already positioned itself for a public listing by raising $65 billion in May, which valued the company at $965 billion. That round was widely viewed as a final major private raise before heading to the stock exchange. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. As both companies navigate the late stages of their respective fundraising and listing processes, the interplay between their valuations will be a key factor for investors watching the AI sector in the coming weeks.
