Anthropic's $965 Billion Valuation Turns Early Backers Into Billionaires Ahead of IPO

As Anthropic prepares for a public listing that could value the AI firm at up to $2 trillion, a look at the massive returns already realized by its venture capital and individual investors at the current private market price.

Anthropic's valuation has reached $965 billion in private markets, a staggering figure that is already minting billionaires from its investor roster even before the artificial intelligence company goes public. This pre-IPO price tag is a significant jump from the $183 billion valuation at its last funding round and sits far below the potential $2 trillion valuation being discussed for its expected public listing this year. The gap between these figures illustrates the enormous potential for wealth creation that the market anticipates from the company's stock debut.

For those who backed Anthropic early, the financial returns are already substantial. The company's journey from a $461 million valuation in 2021 to its current level has created life-changing sums for its first supporters. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, is a prime example. He participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 when the company was valued at just $461 million. Today, his holding of approximately 1% of the company is valued at nearly $10 billion. This demonstrates the powerful effect of early-stage investing in a rapidly growing sector, where a relatively small initial stake can grow into a fortune as the company scales.

The recent past has also proven highly lucrative for investors who entered the picture much later. Spark Capital, for instance, invested $75 million in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round when the company's valuation was $5 billion. That same position is now valued at $7 billion, representing a more than ninetyfold increase in just a few years. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which has invested over $1 billion in the company over time, now holds a stake worth $14 billion. These figures show that even at multi-billion dollar valuations, the potential for significant gains remains high for those who believe in the company's trajectory.

The most recent private funding round, which valued Anthropic at $965 billion, has also delivered major returns for those who participated. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to the company last year when its valuation was $183 billion. That investment is now worth $17 billion and could potentially double again once the company is publicly traded. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also saw its investment grow significantly. After a $35 million investment in 2023, the firm added another $400 million, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures this year to establish his own venture capital firm.

Even investors who joined the company when it was valued at hundreds of billions of dollars have seen their money multiply. Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, made its first investment in Anthropic earlier this year. It provided $3 billion when the company was valued at $380 billion, acquiring about 1% ownership. This stake has already more than doubled in value at the current private market price. The consistent and rapid appreciation of Anthropic's valuation across different funding rounds highlights the intense investor confidence in the company's role within the artificial intelligence industry.

The current situation is a prelude to the company's public listing, which is anticipated this year. Should the company achieve a valuation as high as $2 trillion, the returns for all of its backers would grow even further. The performance of Anthropic's stock after it begins trading will be closely watched by investors and industry observers. Its success could serve as a key indicator for the broader market's appetite for high-growth artificial intelligence companies. For now, the private market valuations already confirm that backing Anthropic has been one of the most profitable decisions in recent venture capital history.
